Travis Freudenberg was born and raised in Alexandria, Minnesota on a healthy diet of free range beef and heavy metal. His culinary and musical palates were expanded while attending the University of Minnesota, Morris, where he graduated with degrees in Jazz Studies and, oddly engough, Biology in 2001. While in attendance at UMM, Travis was a featured soloist with UMM Jazz Ensemble 1 at the 2000 Montreaux Jazz Festival in Montreaux, Switzerland and the 2000 Vienne Jazz Festvial in Vienne, France, and was awarded the Keith Carlson Memorial Jazz Award in 2000.
After graduation, Travis taught Electric Bass at UMM from 2001-2006, setting up the framework for the Electric Bass performance major (the lack of which, while he was an undergraduate, necessitated Travis’ coursework in Biology, and therefore required him to take Organic Chemistry, a class which no bassist should ever have to deal with). During this time, Travis moved his “bass” of operations to Minneapolis, where he taught private lessons and played with several groups, including the Neighborhood Flash. In 2005, the Neighborhood Flash won the Hard Rock Cafe Battle of the Bands and were awarded a contract as the house band at the Minneapolis Hard Rock Cafe.
In the fall of 2005, Travis joined forces with local jazz/funk powerhouse Rare Medium, who he recorded 2007 album “Reconditioned” with. The CD release party for “Reconditioned”, held at the legendary Dakota Jazz Club, was a standing room only affair for those who showed up for the downbeat, as the show sold out in minutes.
After years of neglecting his hard rock roots, Travis answered the call and joined Not One Stone in the summer of 2008, who have brought their crunchy, riff-based rock to stages all over the metro area. They recorded the three song EP “A School of Salmon” in the spring of 2011, and during a recent show helped Travis fulfill a lifelong goal of playing bass dressed like Cobra Commander.
Travis once recorded an album on the same Neve console used at the Record Plant in New York and Electric Lady Studios. That’s not an accomplishment, per se, he just thinks it’s “totally badass”.
